WHAT IS A POETRY SLAM?

A poetry slam is a competitive poetry show where poets perform original pieces, typically within a three-minute time limit and judged by randomly selected audience members, though formats may vary. For more info on our poetry slams, click here. For a list of slam rules, click here.

what is a broken mic?

ULPC Broken Mics are open mic shows, where artists can share any sort of performance material outside of the competition, rules, and format of slam. For more info on our Broken Mics, click here.

How can I perform at one of your shows?

You can sign up for our poetry slams and open mics at the door. Make sure to arrive early, as spots are limited!

I am new to poetry/spoken word! Can I still sign up to perform?

Yes! ULPC welcomes poets in any stage of their creative journey. Whether you’re brand new to spoken word or veteran of the slam scene, your voice is valued and we want to hear your work.

Do I need to memorize my poems?

Nope! Whether or not you memorize your poems is completely up to personal preference. Lots of poets choose to read their pieces from a phone, paper, or book.

Why are masks required?

At the forefront of our mission is accessibility. COVID safety measures like masking and screening ensures a safer environment for immunocompromised people, disabled people, and people without stable access to healthcare. We continue to prioritize COVID safety for the protection of our community and to ensure that our space remains as accessible as possible for those who might otherwise face barriers to participating in the arts.
